Friday Reads: This week's stack

This week’s stack of books. Yes I am reading all of these. There’s a whole other stack of books I’m not actually reading. In the stack you will see hints of where I am traveling this year, hints about an e-book I am writing and the art I am making, the novel of a friend, and a book related to my overall goal of thinking more creatively.

Friday reads – books that spark my creativity this week

This week’s reads. Just finished the novel Britt-Marie Was Here and starting Troubling Love.
Really enjoying When Strangers Meet – very important message for us now as we need to focus on our common humanity and not differences being used to divide us. Loving how Ways of Curating is making me think about art differently.
Beautiful Money is helping me keep my financial game healthy and happy. Urawaza is odd, funny and useful. The Island Japan book is a great way to see an illustrated adventure.
The Art of Vinyasa is my teachers’ book that I got last night at their signing. Can’t wait to dive in. What are you reading today? This week's reads. What books are in your beach bag this summer?

On my recent birthday trip, I had zoomed past the beach turn-off, and slamming on the brakes, took a quick turn into the next place. Guess what? I had come upon a little bookstore, Titcombs Bookshop in Sandwich, MA. Of course I had to delay the beach for books!
Inside, the tiny shop was full of people browsing. I was delighted to see so many people getting books for their beach jaunts.
I try to buy something from every independent bookstore I visit, so this time I picked up The Quotable Book Lover, edited by Ben Jacobs and Helene Hjalmarsson.
I opened it at random and found the perfect quotation to share with you today. It’s so true for me, it made me laugh out loud.

“There are two motives for reading a book: one, that you enjoy it; the other, that you can boast about it.” Bertrand Russell, The Conquest of Happiness, 1930

The perfect setting for a bookish afternoon.
The perfect setting for a bookish afternoon.

Recent reads (all novels this time) I’ll boast about:
Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple – Weirdo or genius? I am sure many of us will relate to Bernadette in this book.
My Wish List by Gregoire Delacourt – A short, sweet and deep book about how winning the lottery could change everything, but not how you imagine.
Loving Frank – Nancy Horan – a great historical novel about Frank Lloyd Wright and the love of his life, Mamah Borthwick.
The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker – A sweet and lyrical novel set in Burma.
Current fiction reads include:
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Lovers at the Chameleon Club by Francine Prose
What books are in your beach bag? Boast away in a comment below.

Read This: 29 Gifts by Cami Walker

Often the things that are most powerful are also the most counter-intuitive.
For instance, if you were diagnosed with a debilitating and life-threatening illness, would you think the path to healing would involve giving, giving and more giving?
Probably not. You’d think – I can barely get from one room to the next…how do I have enough energy to give anything to anyone? You’d think – I need to focus on my healing and then I can think about others’ needs.
But Cami Walker, when diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age thirty-three, found that giving offered a direct path to healing.
Cami tells her remarkable story in her best-selling book, 29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life. The book, our Creativity Book Salon pick for November, is only the beginning. The story and practice of giving a gift every day prompted a global movement, of which there are over 16,000 members in 43 countries.
Inspiring to say the least! I chose this book because I love how extending ourselves to others can create such a cycle of growth and healing. And because it seemed like a good book for the holidays.
Join us Friday, November 30th at noon MDT to explore 29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life. You must be a member of the Creativity Book Salon to participate. It’s free, and easy to join. Just go here.
