Book Giveaway: Jill Berry's Map Art Lab Book

Do you love maps as much as I do? If so, you’ll love this new book Map Art Lab.
LAB_Map_Cover_r6I’m very excited to be part of the blog hop forLinden McNeilly and  Jill Berry‘s new book,  Map Art Lab. When I got my copy the other day I flipped the pages with great enthusiasm. Here we have the basics of a map – the fun things like a cartouche and a compass rose and a legend – don’t all those words evoke such mystery and adventure?

As part of the blog hop, Jill’s publisher will be giving away a copy of the book to a reader of my blog. All you need to do is leave a comment below before May 16th. A winner will be announced by May 19th and the book will be sent to you.

To enter the drawing for the book, simply answer this question in a comment below: What is appealing to you about map art?

I love maps of all kinds…and love making maps as a way to imagine known places and unknown,or imaginary places! I have loved making maps and globes with my students and find that place and geography come alive when we make our own maps! I’d be delighted to win this book!Thank you for the give away opportunity!

I love the unlimited possibilities of mapping our surroundings and our lives. Jill’s last book was a revelation to me and I was astonished by all the different perspectives on map making displayed in both the book and the exhibit of maps at the Denver Public Library. I can’t wait to start the exercises in the new book (I’m not sure I want to topo my nose, however).

I’ve always been drawn to the colors on the maps, Like maps of MN for example. All that blue and then the different lines you can try to make images with. I love looking at town names. A little weird I know, but it’s fun. Used to sit in the backseat while on vacation and look at the maps we got for free from gas stations. Depending on the length of the trip, the more maps! I just wish I had saved them.

I see map art as a way to let my imagination & creativity soar in a new way. I’ve always considered cartography as serious & boring. Books like this give me a new perspective & respect for this form of art.

I love pouring over maps to plan adventures, and to pull them out whilst on the trail to figure out the name of a mountain or other natural landmark. I also love using them to navigate while on the road. And creating maps from my imagination. Maps certainly do evoke a sense of adventure and exploration in me!
Thanks for including me in this fun giveaway! I’m excited to check out Jill’s new book one way or another:)

I love the way they look – their lines, rhythm, movement and patterns. I’m intrigued that maps are tangible, portable guides to places and that they impart information much like a painting: they translate what is three-dimensional into two dimensions.

WHat I love about Map art is the special attention to details. When I was a little girl I always loved drawing the inside of houses and ballrooms because of the detail to dress, fashion and design! Drawing a map that is based on a life experience is a lot like that, with fancy rose compasses and sea monsters, marking the treasure with an “x” and adding a touch of nostalgia is fun fun fun. Fun to see others viewpoints learn about their life processes and also to show about mine!
You know I love all your work Jill, and you too! Would be thrilled to win this book ‘MAP ART LAB’! Thanks so much for the chance, Sanna

Map art is appealing to me because there are so many cartographies that cannot be explained with words — cartographies of the spirit, of emotions, of personal story. A map can tell a story that can’t fit into words.

The map is one of the best metaphors for our life journey here on earth…we are always searching for the correct direction to navigate through our dark valleys. to find the trails that lead over our craggy mountain passes, to bathe in cool flowing rivers that connect to the oceans of truth. There is something about a map, and map imagery that speaks to our inner most landscape as authentic and mystical.

The thing I love most about Map Art is the seeming random design created by the streets and cartography. They are such lovely, organic shapes. And then to top everything off with beautiful cartouches. They make me feel like I’m creating my dream world or destination. There is just something magical about it. Thank you for the opportunity to win.

In my art I entertain myself making imaginary maps, and “Treasured Maps” by commission for someone’s adventure. Maps have always been a part of my life. Growing up we traveled all over the world. When I was older I was the navigator, my favorite chore. There we were whizzing by, in car or on train, looking at the map grounded me, it placed me in the here and now. It was so exciting to see where we were going, and estimate the arrival time by judging the map distance. I love the colors that represent features, it helps me envision a place I want to go.

Maps hold intrigue and a sense of wonder. Promise of a journey, albeit through a normal life if not with huge travel plans. Then, mapping it. Making whatever the adventure, meaningful and worthy of record. And, I love Jill’s creative and unorthodoxed ideas of stretching the limits of mapmaking.

Map Art occasionally appeared in my early paintings, but I not not thought much a out it until my third grade granddaughter had to design a costume for the vocabulary parade. We looked at lots of maps and learned how to use a compass rose before she designed the costume which she wore as “Compass Rose.” We may be including map art in other projects!
