The Daily Writing Impulse

Get your writing out of your head and onto paper

You want to write, but somehow your writing impulse slips away, becoming less important than the ‘make a living, raise the kids, keep the house afloat’ impulse.

And no wonder! Basic survival and relationships can’t really be shelved for a more convenient time. Making your way in the world trumps creativity.

But at what cost? Is your creativity really negotiable and shelvable?

Your vitality – the energy you use to get through the day – is directly linked to your creative expression.

My students and clients who regularly devote time to their writing report more:

  • energy
  • optimism
  • engagement in their relationships
  • confidence.

People who create consistently – whether for professional or personal reasons – feel happier. I know this is true for me. When I write regularly, I feel free and empowered. I generate more ideas, not only for my creative pursuits, but for my work.

Brief writing sessions get and keep you writing

You don’t need to become a reckless hermit to get your writing into your schedule. Over and over again, my clients report great satisfaction from writing just 15 minutes a day.

That’s right. Fifteen minutes a day builds a writing habit that you can maintain – on your terms.

Then there’s the problem of what to write. You’ve got a ton of story and blog ideas, but the starkly pristine blank page shuts that writing impulse down faster than you can say writer’s block.

You need the starter’s pistol to get you – and your words – out of the gate.

“As writers we are often alone. I look forward to starting my work with Cynthia’s prompt and blessing every day, and it always comes, like a friendly hand stretching out from writer to writer through the ether, encouraging and provocative.”

- Julie Ball, writer, Australia

I’ve been asked many times to develop a program like this. I hear this all the time: ‘Just give me your prompts, Cynthia, so I can get started!’

FAQs

What’s a ‘prompt’?

A writing prompt is a word or phrase –a jumping-off place that allows you to start somewhere. My prompts will springboard you past the daunting, pristine blank page. I suggest using the prompt to get started – jump in – and then let the writing take you wherever you want to go.

When do the prompts start?

You can begin any time you want – beginning of the month, middle of the month – anytime! When you sign up, you’ll receive your first prompt that day. The prompts will march into your inbox every day after that.

How can prompts be used?

Lots of ways, some of them being:
  • develop current projects like novels or non-fiction books
  • draft blog posts or articles
  • write e-books
  • keep a daily journal
  • explore and gain confidence in your writing voice.

What if I don’t like the prompts?

Often we’ll see a prompt – a word or phrase – and think, no, that’s not for me. But if you give it a try, often you’ll be shocked at how your creative mind loved the prompts your critical mind was so quick to reject.

“When I switched to Cynthia’s prompts, I never went back to my own.

Using prompts generated outside myself helped me to break through the limits I had created. Cynthia’s prompts yielded more surprising connections and rewarding results. They often sparked a new way into my characters’ attitudes and interactions.

It also proved I could write from anything, any time.” Julie Ball, writer, Australia

Some sample prompts:

  • My suitcase…
  • I wish I’d told him…
  • Slice of lemon…
  • That one summer…

See? Evocative enough to get started, broad enough for anyone to connect with.

Will you critique my writing?

No.

Will you coach me past stuck places in my writing life?

Sure! Check out my coaching packages to see which is best for you now.

The Daily Writing Impulse is quick and dirty – you get the prompt, then get the pen into gear and go. If you want more support in your free writing, consider the Free Write Fling, which includes peer support and my support, and takes place three times a year.
